TEST DRIVE MEME 1

NOTES:

IF BOTH CHARACTERS APP IN AND AGREE, THREADS USING PROMPT 1 CAN BE COUNTED AS GAME CANON.
PLEASE READ THE FAQ TO DECIDE YOUR ORGANIC FORM BEFORE POSTING!

PROMPT 1: ARRIVAL

You awake laying on your back in an, admittedly comfortable, pod. You can't move anything but your eyes, can't even feel your body yet. How you got here or why is a blank. You may have been in the middle of your day, asleep, or even- for what you remember- should be dead. Then a screen directly in front of your face flickers to life and in crisp, black and white displays: DON'T PANIC. The following video then plays:

The screen flickers again and reads: CONGRATULATIONS ON PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE! WELCOME TO VAULT LIFE, CITIZEN. WELCOME TO YEAR: [ERROR]. YOUR PERSONAL BELONGINGS ARE LOCATED IN [FILE CORRUPTED. SEE SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR]. ENJOY YOUR STAY AND THANK YOU FROM YOUR FRIENDS AT VAULT-TEC.

The pod then unseals and you are able to, unstably at first, climb out of the pod. Your body may feel foreign for a moment- perhaps entirely foreign if you suddenly find yourself a human, ghoul, or super mutant for the first time. But whatever your form, you have two items on: a bright blue jumpsuit with the number 66 in yellow on the back, and a mechanical device known as a Pip-boy sealed onto your arm. If you click on the buttons it takes you to an instruction screen.

You look around to find yourself in a room of other pods. Some are just opening, other people looking as confused as you climbing out. Others remain closed with the status of 'STASIS' on the screens attached to the pods. The rest of the room is less than impressive. Computer systems that seem out of place compared to the technology level of the pods are scattered across the room, apparently running the chambers. Trying to access them, even for the most talented hacker, will simply result in SEE OVERSEER being displayed. There is large metal door leading to the rest of the vault, a lever on the wall next to it that will cause it to open.

Welcome, dweller, to vault 66.

PROMPT 2: SETTLING IN

The living quarters of the vault leave something to be desired. Like non-moldy bedding or fewer skeletons and less blood on the walls. It's clear that whatever happened to the last occupants of the vault, whoever they were, it wasn't exactly a peaceful end. The medical wing has some of the worst blood splatter...but that at least you can pretend was from needed medical interventions. Right?

At the moment, the entire vault is run only on emergency generators, creating dull, flickering light throughout the underground base. None of the computers are working yet, and what appear to be three robots are powered-down in various corners of the vault. There's only you and the people that woke up with you now.

Despite this, there's some hope. There's clean, if very mineral tasting, water in the sinks, toilets, and showers. There's a pool table if someone can relax enough for a game and doesn't mind the fact it looks like a pool cue shoved in the eye socket may have caused the death of a couple of the skeletons laying around. Further, on exploring the kitchen there's even some food! It's all pre-apocalypse, hyper preserved canned goods and sugary cereals that somehow haven't gone bad yet, but it's something.

Those willing to explore a little more will find they are not alone in the vault. In the shadows created by the flickering lights or outside of the range of the light of your pip-boy, there is skittering. The noise isn't noticeable when there are groups of people, but get down to three or two and it's impossible to ignore. If you don't run away, you'll eventually come across groups of foot long radroaches, gigantic cockroaches that are ready for some fresh food for once. And it looks like you're on the menu. Hopefully you've got one of those pool cues or found a wrench or some other weapon, because it's gonna take more than a stomp to take these guys out.

PROMPT 3: A DAY OF REST

It's been a few days since everyone got out of the pods and started settling in. Louis, the 'Mr. Handy' robot in charge of cooking, can power up for whole hours at a time now. While he's recharging again now, he did make quite a feast beforehand. A whole cake, some tasty cola, and even grilled meat (if you helped kill the radroaches, you know where that meat came from). He even found some old party decorations that, once upon a time, were supposed to be used when the vault was unsealed and everyone allowed to leave. Everyone waking up is close enough, the robot had claimed, and hung the streamers and balloons throughout the rec area. There are even party hats, for the particularly festive.

The party lasts a good hour before the price for relaxing is paid: the emergency power flickers once, twice, then shuts down. Worse, the constant hum of the air vents you hadn't even really notice until now stops, leaving the vault in total silence and darkness. Only the pod room has any energy left, and all of that must be used to keep those still in stasis alive.

Repairs are going to have to be made.

((OOC: feel free to make assumptions and go wild with repairing the reactor or the emergency power supply. It's a TDM, mod approval not needed for anything)).

[ Elizabeth doesn't know what she means when she says the venom won't affect her, but she sounds confident about it so that's enough for now. Hopefully, there's no venom hiding in this strange metal underground place. There's so much about the video that she's trying to process. If vaults were made for protection, what from? War? A weapon of another time or place?

She shakes her head at the question. Elizabeth has not looked at the pip-boy on her arm. It feels heavy there. She's tempted to try to rip it off in its heaviness, because it feels like another part of this trap. But it has information they need. It has a map of this place. She doesn't look at it yet herself. Her curiosity is dulled in the aftermath of her own death and all she lived before it (the knowing and feeling everything).

Elizabeth follows directly behind, keeping close and paying attention. She's tense, searching for potential danger, traps. ]

Kijuju? Where is that? ( She's read and studied geography extensively, but she's never heard of the place. If this is another doorway in another building like she suspects, it might not even exist in her own world, or it's a small village or city that she might not remember. )

...Rapture. An underwater city. ( It's not the world (or story, or timeline) where she was originally from, but another tear she went through on a mission to ease her own guilt and repay a debt to a girl she'd let down. ) Remember how I was talking about having experience with the strange before? I learned through it there are countless worlds- timelines. I don't know if we're from the same one.

[ Jill expects BOWs wherever she turns, but maybe this place is just messy? Be nice to think that but she's noticed blood splatters and bones in preliminary searches nearby. She hasn't gone too far from this room but it has an eerie quality about it, a bad vibe. The cloying feeling of the atmosphere that can only be described as intuition. The name itself a vault and not a bunker... that, too, makes her think there's something serious happening -- has happened? Perhaps on the outside, but vaults could be prisons, too.

That's something she doesn't want to think about. Being trapped. One prison to another, both with some false freedom. Before it was within her own body and here... it was yet to be seen. She's alert for now. Waiting for something bigger.
]

Africa. [ Jill isn't sure if she'd even have heard of it at this point. After all, this place isn't likely on any map and nothing else she's seen has made her believe it's in her own world. What a crazy thought... ] Underwater.

[ Jill repeats in between words, lets her get her say out, whatever it may be. The very idea of that is... it's mythical. But she doesn't doubt this woman is from where she says she is from. ]

That seems possible. I've never heard of Rapture and where I'm from underwater cities are more an idea not a practice, maybe not even possible to sustain. [ It's obviously not her specialty. The hallway seems to stretch to the same room on the opposite end and the one at the turn stretches to a closed door and what looks to be another hallway. At least it's not too open and branching; she can ensure she's on top of things when there aren't more paths. She starts down the next, looking down a hall she hadn't noticed before; the door is open and it appears to have some buckets and mops. ] Looks like janitorial. Should keep going past this.

[ Elizabeth can't say she knows every single city in Africa, not by far, but the fact that this woman has never heard of Rapture puts things in perspective. Rapture isn't Elizabeth's original world. She started in Colombia- a city in the sky (constants (a city somewhere impossible) and variables (sky instead of water) ). Even living in Colombia, she doesn't know what the rest of the world knew about it, because she was always trapped in that damned tower. However, she imagines people in the world where Ratpure existed, they must have heard about it- heard about Andrew Ryan and his venture of building an underwater city. ]

I can't say I know all of the science behind it. [ She knows some of it, because she had to repair a machine to lift part of the city from the bottom of the ocean floor. ] I was... more of a visitor for a time. What year was it for you?

[ That will further cement the fact they're likely from other worlds altogether, but then what does it mean about this place? How could it have the power she did? The Lutece device? Maybe someone else could have built it and dragged people here. She tries to remain alert while working it through her mind. She glances into the room, nodding in agreement with the other woman. ]

It might be useful for supplies eventually, but we have to keep pushing forward for answers.

[ It's all the more mysterious rather than having more answers as they speak. With every response comes another question or three. Could she perhaps be from the past or the future? Or does it mean she's from some strange alternate place entirely? It's a little out there for Jill to consider, but so is everything about being here. To go from an oil refinery, being hit by the brunt of a rocket launcher blast, then being... here. Maybe this is what death is? A funny little thought. ]

Can't say I would, either. Unfortunately we're still in the same boat it sounds. [ She pauses since that didn't occur to her despite the idea of future or past. ] The year was 2009. How about you? Somehow I get the feeling our years won't align.

[ Though Jill does peek a touch, she's not sure they're immediately useful. A mop might be used as a weapon but she's not sure how useful it would be to her companion and Jill would sooner rely on her body. ]

Based on the room we came from, I get the feeling it's not going to be any more clean. [ She pauses to glance at the Pip-Boy and fiddle with it, taking in the map again. ] You want to head to the housing units? Seem to be on a different floor but it'd be nice to claim a place to crash if we can't escape immediately.

[ 2009. Elizabeth cannot understand it. She knows how far ahead that must make Jill, but in a different world without Rapture or Colombia. Her original world was in a far earlier time than the one she was last in. What time does it make this place? How many more variables to add to the list? The constants keep her grounded but there's none of those anymore. ]

...1958. Rapture wasn't where or when I'm originally from. I've never seen even a window of a world so far ahead.

[ How can this place draw them in from such differing doors? How does it have the power she once did? She grimaces at the thought of having to stay here for any length of time at all. ]

It's all covered in dust and blood. [ She looks to the map at Jill's arm and nods. ] I don't want to know what the housing looks like when the rest of this vault appears like this.

[ It's hard to wrap her mind around, so Jill just lets it all go for now -- at least the making sense of time part. The rest might be integral to finding something in common between them somehow. The idea this is random is frightening, but isn't that exactly what happened with Wesker and his kidnappings over the years for people to experiment on? Anyone he and Tricell could get their hands on. ]

I see. At least it's a familiar year to me and doesn't sound impossible. [ Anything much further ahead or behind would make it all the more difficult. ] What do you mean by a window, though?

[ Something like a telescope? Did she dabble in science? Not that it would make Jill distrust her, but it's certainly something that puts her on edge these days. ]

...can't say I don't agree with you. There's... well there's a rec room, apparently? Nothing on the map about an entrance or exit, though, so I suppose we'll have to be thorough.

[It's an attempt to find a constant. They both appear to be human. There's that. They speak the same language- another one. She knows about Africa. It means even the Earth itself with its countries are likely similar. The number of variables are likely too many to list off.

She hesitates in answering the question. She realizes this gives her more experience potentially with something similar to what happened to them. The powers are not her own anymore. Even the machine couldn't do this. Emotion crowds briefly. She shoves it away. People might be right not to trust her. There was a time she bent time itself to get revenge. She's not that angry, all-knowing person anymore.]

...a tear between worlds. I used to be able to create them. There was a machine where I'm from that could make them too. It was a way to look from one world into the next.

[Elizabeth shakes her head.]

So we've been brought here to what? Be trapped? Someone must have done this.

sorry about the speed! been having trouble using my hands lately, rip.

[ Jill isn't used to the fantastical. Science can lead there to some degree, but it's still something she can understand. This is out there in a way that she has to suspend her disbelief. If she doesn't, she won't be able to function right. Can't protect herself or anyone else like that.

She waits and nearly tells her she doesn't have to answer before she speaks. Jill feels like she might have played a hand that made Elizabeth feel forced and it doesn't sit well with her.
]

That's incredible. I guess this place existing, then, doesn't feel so out there to you? To me this is... I guess fictional, something that's theorized, but no proof. [ It's her way of making sure it's understood. Perhaps for patience, though hopefully that won't be a problem. ] That's what I'm trying to figure out, though. Based on what we've seen it looks like experiments might have been conducted here -- it's a familiar set-up to me in my line of work. I'm not sure if that's what we are, but I get the feeling someone or someones might be watching us. No sign of cameras so far, though...

[ Jill hesitates, taking in the area. ]

There's a place on the map that's marked as closed off. You want to head that way instead and investigate? Not sure if it's a "clue," but it's the only thing out of the ordinary on it.

don't worry about it at all! i hope your hands feel better soon :(

[It was science that explained her powers. It was science that created vigors- plasmids. It was science she studied for the years she was locked away in her tower. She understands the need to understand and to have some basis in reality. For all her understanding of different worlds, she is not used to this. Worlds that pull people through without their say-so.]

No. I am used to worlds existing through the tears that are created either by me or this device that was made. I know it's not the case for everyone. [She understands Jill can't reach this same familiarity so easily especially when it feels like it's fictional instead.] I'm... used to experiments too. I'd have to say I agree with you. There are ways to watch people even without cameras.

[Mirrors can be turned into windows easily. She knows this from experience too. Of being watched before. She turns toward Jill. Her expression is quiet but serious before she nods.]

Let's check it out. It's the best clue we have so far.
